This bolster swing is made by taking 2 - 2x4's of your desired length and screwing together (or using a 4x4). Wraping the boards in padding (even old towels or sheets can be used) and then wrapping it all in fabric. You would need to add a hook to each end and then add the rope. Because your hooks in the ceiling are in the joists/beams they can easily hold the weight of an adult.
Adding on here if you don't mind :) Our swings are attached to joists but they are highly upgraded inside the attic. They have 2x12s attaching the joints to their neighboring joists on either side of where the swing connects and a 2x4 attaching the joist to the roof rafters. Plywood floor in the attic also acts to spread out the weight. A regular joist in a celing - especially if you have an old house - would sag (or worse) if an adult of large child were to do more than simply stand steadily on a swing. We used to have them attached to regular joists and my 2 year old could get the ceiling moving when he bounced vigourously. When we built our addition we spent a lot of time reinforcing the ceiling in here for his swings, anticpating the future. Please use caution.
ReplyDeleteGood pictures Heather! You make my house look so bright and cheery ;)
Good to know!
ReplyDeleteIn our home (built in the 70's) the joists are new enough to hold the weight.
Probably best to get up in the attic and check it out first!
